Life in the Chesapeake Bay (autographed by the authors) is a superbly illustrated and clearly written nature guidebook describing hundreds of plants and animals and their habitats. Now in its third edition, the book has been updated with a new gallery of thirty-nine color photographs and dozens of new species descriptions and illustrations. The new edition retains the charm of an engaging classic while adding a decade of new research. This classic guide to the plants and animals of the Chesapeake Bay will appeal to a variety of readers—year-round residents and summer vacationers, professional biologists and amateur scientists, conservationists and sportsmen.
Along with a signed copy of their book the Lippson’s have donated a limited edition print of a Maryland blue crab, (hand colored by Alice Jane) which is a copy of the original illustration on page 156, as well as two beautifully matted and framed ORIGINAL PEN AND INK ILLUSTRATIONS. A description of each piece is as follows:
* Framed illustration are of mollusks that lived in Chesapeake Bay during the Miocene age some five to twelve million years ago; the fossil snail shell appears on page 42, other fossil shells appear on page 43.
* The fossil snail shell, Echphora gardnerae (formally E. quadricostata) was the first fossil snail discovered in North America and described in a book published in English in 1770. In 1984 it was designated by the Maryland General Assembly as the official state fossil shell.
Alice Jane Lippson is a biological illustrator and researcher in estuarine ecology. Robert L. Lippson, prior to his retirement, was a marine scientist with the National Marine Fisheries Services and an adjunct professor of invertebrate zoology at Michigan State University. The Lippsons live and write on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.
